The 2021 Giro d’Italia ran from Saturday, May 8 until Sunday, May 30.
The Giro d’Italia is one of professional cycling’s three Grand Tour races, alongside the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana.
The 2021 Giro d’Italia was won by Egon Bernal of Colombia, with Italy’s Damiano Caruso finishing second and Simon Yates of Great Britain finishing third. Australia’s Caleb Ewan won two stages in the early going, but was forced to withdraw with a knee injury.
The Giro d’Italia was first raced in 1909 and was established by Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, and has been staged on 103 occasions. It is raced across 23 days with 21 stages interspersed with two rest days, and normally concludes in the northern Italian city of Milan – although 2018 saw a break with tradition as the tour ended in Rome, while 2019 saw it end in Verona.
Three riders – Alfredo Binda, Fausto Coppi and Eddie Merckx – have tasted success at the Giro d’Italia on a record five occasions. Other notable winners of Italy’s most prestigious cycling race include Miguel Indurain, Marco Pantani and Alberto Contador.
