NBA’s global stars usher in new era as LeBron, Steph, KD fade into the background

The Atlanta Hawks have announced that they’re waiving their popular veteran Australian point guard Patty Mills.
The 35-year-old from Canberra, who’s had an 879-game career in the NBA, had not been getting much playing time with the Hawks, averaging 2.7 points, 1.1 rebounds and 10.6 minutes in 19 games off the bench this season.
He is shooting 37.3 per cent from the floor and 38.2 per cent from 3-point range and could be picked up by another team.
The Hawks announced the news on Thursday on X, with a message of thanks to the veteran.
It opens up the possibility of Mills getting a short-term deal to finish the season with a playoff-contending team which needs to add extra perimeter shooting or it could mean the end of the road for the Boomers legend.
Mills has previously spoken about potentially finishing his career back home with a stint in the NBL and clubs would be clamouring to sign him up given he is still an offensive weapon but he is also one of the highest-profile Australian players of all time.
The Olympic bronze medallist, who’s had 107 starts in the NBA, averages 8.9 points and 2.2 assists per game across his career with the Portland Trail Blazers, San Antonio Spurs, Brooklyn Nets and Hawks.
He won the 2014 NBA championship with the Spurs.
