World Football – EPL, Champions League & Europe

World Football, Association Football, or soccer, as it is sometimes known, has been played in its present form since the official laws of the game were drafted in 1863. The world’s most popular sport in terms of player and spectator participation, World Football’s governing body is FIFA, based in Geneva and currently chaired by Sepp Blatter.

The pinnacle of World Football is the World Cup finals held every four years, while the annual UEFA Champions League is considered Europe’s most prestigious club tournament, and is held by Catalan giants FC Barcelona. The English Premier League [EPL] is currently the most watched league in world football, with the title currently being held by Manchester United.

Home-grown football could be Japan’s path to World Cup glory

by Ken Matsushima - April 4th 2012 @ 9:00am

Last week, Gamba Osaka made headlines with their decision to fire coach Jose Serrao just three weeks into a new season. While some commentators have tried to qualify the situation by pointing out that Gamba actually lost five matches in those three weeks (including two ACL contests), it does not change the fact that this [...]

Match fixing still an issue in football

by ligpuan - March 8th 2012 @ 3:08am

When the first football game was played in Britain 150 years ago, it was pure football: no referee, no bad words, no racism and no match fixing. Years passed, the game improved, the audience and money increased. Competition is now sky high. This brought some big challenges and problems to the game. Regulations got stricter [...]

FIFA must stop on-field theatrics

by k77sujith - March 8th 2012 @ 2:30am

Footballers have the potential to become reasonably good actors once they decide to hang up their boots. But it’s their on-field acting which has been plaguing the beautiful game for some time now. Call it gamesmanship or deception, it’s here to stay. On-field theatrics have sadly become a major tactical part of the game. For [...]

Why Mark Bresciano adds real value to the Socceroos

by Sports Freak - March 1st 2012 @ 2:59am

The Socceroos are much better with classy midfielder Mark Bresciano back in the fold. It only took two minutes for the 32-year old’s pure ability to be shown. A one-two with Harry Kewell and then a beautifully weighted 40-metre pass found James Troisi on the left flank. Troisi’s pin-point cross found Brett Emerton, who headed [...]

Socceroos and Green Falcons put focus back on football

by apaway - March 1st 2012 @ 2:54am

Dead rubber? No such thing, if tonight’s Australia versus Saudi Arabia game is anything to go by. This was by no means the best performance by a Socceroos team. However, the sheer excitement and action of the AAMI Park World Cup qualifier shifted the emphasis back onto the pitch, after a day of off-field related [...]

The A-League’s positive influence on the Socceroos

by Matt Bungard - March 1st 2012 @ 2:54am

A superb second half resurgence by some of the A-League’s leading names saw Australia storm home to a 4-2 victory, destroying Saudi Arabia’s hopes of progressing to the next round of World Cup qualification. There were a few eyebrow-raising selections, in a particular the selection of Mark Bresciano in a more deep-lying midfield role, but [...]

Time for alternatives to penalty shoot-outs

by anastaciK - February 29th 2012 @ 1:57am

In light of Liverpool’s Carling Cup triumph over championship big guns Cardiff City, their first trophy since that legendary night in Istanbul, the question over whether the penalty shoot-out is the best and fairest way to decide a stalemate has once again been raised. The pressure that each player faces before taking their turn for [...]

Can Carle be the controller the Socceroos crave?

by Tony Tannous - February 28th 2012 @ 4:15am

While much of the attention has rightly been on the tension surrounding the FFA and A-League club owners, for a brief couple of hours tomorrow night in Melbourne the attention turns to matters on the field, and there is much intrigue about how the Socceroos shape-up against Saudi Arabia. Even if it’s a dead rubber [...]

Why Manchester United are never really beaten

by M_Campbell23 - February 9th 2012 @ 3:55am

As a Manchester United supporter, I’m often accused of being a bandwagon rider. Their fightback against Chelsea at the weekend reminded me that I don’t love United because they win all the time. I love them because they are never beaten. This is a team which has had a pretty rough year on a number [...]
