The club finally made its first finals appearance in 2009/10, however a disastrous losing streak in 2010/11 saw David Mitchell replaced by former North Queensland Fury boss Ian Ferguson. The club was restored to second last by the end of the season having against struggled. Will Perth Glory’s season 2011/12 hold a brighter future?

FFA moves to strengthen coaching, player pathways

by philipcoates - May 5th 2012 @ 1:02am

It’s the nature of any sporting competition that most of us spend our time only looking at the shop front window. We thrill or groan at the quality of the football on the park. We watch transfixed as Clive Palmer and Nathan Tinkler air dirty laundry in full sight. And the football enthusiasts and football [...]

Video technology needed to support football referees

by Stephanie Shipard - May 5th 2012 @ 12:58am

Refereeing is one of the most highly scrutinized aspects of any game and football is no exception. Referees are generally the focus of player, coach, and supporter abuse. Even the media likes to throw in their two cents. Why is football one of the only codes in the world that doesn’t have a video referral [...]

The latest argument for video technology in football

by philipcoates - April 28th 2012 @ 12:53am

A lot has been said in the wake of the Berisha penalty which decided the A-League grand final. Commentators have argued for or against the use of video technology in football in Australia. While I’d argue that the Berisha incident is one of those that would never be resolved by use of video, I still [...]

Why are A-League fans so quick to criticise?

by Mike Tuckerman - April 27th 2012 @ 1:17am

Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Sergio Ramos hit three of the worst penalties imaginable in Real Madrid’s shoot-out defeat to Bayern Munich yesterday. Should we stop watching the UEFA Champions League because of it? Ronaldo had already scored from the spot as Real and Bayern finished level on aggregate in their semi-final clash at the Bernabeu, [...]

Brisbane Roar’s tactics and bad case of Deja vu

by The Crowd - April 25th 2012 @ 1:16am

Brisbane became the first ever back-to-back champions in the A-League with another late win in a grand final. Both sides were unchanged from their last game, meaning Brisbane were in their usual 4-3-3 composition. Thomas Broich and Henrique flanked Besart Berisha up front, while Perth played 4-4-2, with Miller and Burns competing in central midfield. [...]

It’s time for a video referee system in A-League

by smithha - April 24th 2012 @ 12:00pm

As a proud Queenslander, I was thrilled to see the Roar lift the trophy once more. Yet for all my joy, I admit that a video referee system must be introduced to make sure last night’s controversial penalty never happens again. When Besart Berisha fell in the box in injury time, and Jarred Gillett pointed [...]

Football isn’t the only code where diving occurs

by Villa_B - April 24th 2012 @ 10:55am

Following Brisbane Roar’s 2-1 come-from-behind win over Perth Glory, the raging debate over diving reared its ugly head back in the spotlight. There is a growing consensus within the Australian sporting landscape that football is a sport raged with diving. Many sports fans use this as an excuse for their lack of interest in the [...]

Apologies to Gillett and Berisha

by apaway - April 24th 2012 @ 10:30am

It is staggering the amount of rubbish that has been written in the wake of Brisbane Roar’s thrilling A-League grand final win over Perth Glory. While much of the discourse has been great, and passionate arguments about the final penalty decision have raged, there was the predictable and totally misinformed peddling of the “divers”, “cheats” [...]

Were Mark Shield and Jarred Gillett vindicated in the end?

by Tony Tannous - April 24th 2012 @ 4:27am

11 years ago, in the 2000/2001 NSL grand final, a then-27 year old Mark Shield was on the sideline as the experienced Eddie Lennie took charge of the decider which saw the Wollongong Wolves beat South Melbourne 2-1. By my reckoning, the youngster from Brisbane had been the outstanding whistle-blower that season, and I dropped [...]
