One of just three teams from the old NSL to appear in the A-League, the Newcastle Jets won their first championship in 2007/08 after beating their great rivals, the Central Coast Mariners, 1-0. The club has since found itself floating around the lower half of the competition and came under severe financial strain in the lead-up to the 2010/11 season. However, the Jets’ short-term future is now secured until at least 2020 after the club was resold to mining magnate Nathan Tinkler, and the club will look to a strong 11/12 season under continuing coach Branko Culina and marquee Jason Culina.

Newcastle Jets fans want a say in how the club is run
by John Davidson - May 3rd 2012 @ 12:00pm
The Newcastle Jets may have been saved yesterday thanks to Nathan Tinkler’s miraculous U-Turn, but a committed band of Jets supporters are still striving for a say in how the club is run. Talks between Tinkler and FFA chairman Frank Lowy ensured that Tinkler’s Hunter Sports Group will remain owners of the club. In the [...]
Jets saved: Is this the turning point for A-League?
by Adrian Musolino - May 2nd 2012 @ 2:12am
On the same day that Football Federation Australia announced that Nathan Tinkler’s Hunter Sports Group (HSG) would honour its contract to run the Newcastle Jets, saving the former champions, the governing body heralded a new dawn of collaboration with A-League clubs. Finally, some good news from the previously beleaguered league. With a collective sigh of [...]

by John Davidson - April 27th 2012 @ 1:12am
As FFA ramps up talks with Newcastle businessmen about taking over the Jets, a part ownership scheme based around a community supporters trust is gaining ground. The man behind the model is 21-year-old Jets fan Toby Mills. His proposal is that Jets supporters buy shares in the club and have a say in how it [...]
HMAS A-League and Captain Buckley sail on
by ItsCalledFootball - April 26th 2012 @ 1:07am
It’s the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the ship that could never be sunk. HMS Titanic was submerged by an iceberg in the icy waters of the North Atlantic, and hundreds lost their lives. The showpiece of modern 20th century naval architecture lies rusting and rotting on the bottom of the ocean, and like [...]
FFA must not be bold for boldness’ sake
by Baldrick44 - April 26th 2012 @ 1:01am
Frank Lowy is a clever man under pressure. He and FFA CEO Ben Buckley have attempted to advocate a league that has difficulty communicating its message to club owners who are becoming rapidly disillusioned with the governing body’s aloofness. Furthermore, the fan-base of football in Australia is becoming rapidly bemused by a body that continues [...]
A massive clean-out is required at FFA
by papmeister - April 24th 2012 @ 12:15pm
Surely it’s time for some heads to roll at FFA headquarters, after Newcastle Jets management came out on Friday and re-asserted their desire to take no further part in the A-League. It’s just one of many stuff-ups by the FFA, and comes after Hunter Sports Group and Nathan Tinkler, Australia’s richest man under 40, decided [...]
Canberra not yet ready for A-League franchise
by UCstudent - April 24th 2012 @ 12:43am
While there has been local uproar at the decision to pull the plug on Canberra’s A-League bid, it cannot be guaranteed to the FFA that Canberra has enough business and public backing to sustain a successful A-League team. How often in the past have we seen Canberra teams enter national soccer competitions, (Canberra City, Canberra [...]

by John Davidson - April 16th 2012 @ 1:59pm
Newcastle businessman Andrew Poole has emerged as a possible replacement for Nathan Tinkler as the owner of the beleaguered Jets A-League club. Mike Cockerill flagged Poole’s potential involvement in The Sydney Morning Herald today. The door is still open to Tinkler but if he “isn’t prepared to compromise, a new ownership structure incorporating rival mining [...]

Fans want a club, not a name, that fills them with Pride
by Tony Tannous - May 16th 2012 @ 3:30am
While the word “pride” featured prominently in the discourse about the desired culture of the new Western Sydney franchise, for a while yesterday it seemed the FFA had the word “culture” confused with the word “name”. That was the only conclusion to draw after The World Game yesterday reported that Pride was among the FFA’s [...]
