Gold Coast United, along with the now defunct North Queensland Fury, were granted permission to enter the A-League in the 2009/10 season. Supported by a wealthy owner in Clive Palmer, the club has been a success on the field, making the finals in consecutive years. However, concerns have been raised over the future of the club following poor crowd attendances, and a major exodus of Gold Coast’s player group. Reports that Palmer would withdraw his financial support before the 2011/12 season have not yet come to fruition.

Western Sydney’s new A-League team: What’s in a name?
by Aaron Walker - May 11th 2012 @ 3:46am
A-League fans of west Sydney, as a Canberran I’m currently feeling a great deal of jealousy of you and all the excitement surrounding your shiny new unnamed A-League club. You have many exciting times ahead. Derbies, goals, rivalries, big games laced with heartbreak and elation. These are some of the things that help forge a [...]
Lies, damned lies and A-League crowd attendances
by dinoweb - May 7th 2012 @ 6:47am
For years we have all heard about how great the attendances are for the AFL in Australia. It has one of the largest crowd attendance rates in the world, and in 2011 an average of 34,937 patrons came to 187 matches during the regular season. By comparison, A-League crowds averaged 10,487 in 135 regular season [...]
Where to now for Gold Coast fans?
by shaker13 - May 5th 2012 @ 12:57am
During my regular perusal of the FourFourTwo forum the other day, I came across a thread which read “what now for GCU fans?” “Are you now lost to football? Will you start following another club or go back to the club you were following before GCU came along?” the message continued. It’s a question I’ve [...]
Jets saved: Is this the turning point for A-League?
by Adrian Musolino - May 2nd 2012 @ 2:12am
On the same day that Football Federation Australia announced that Nathan Tinkler’s Hunter Sports Group (HSG) would honour its contract to run the Newcastle Jets, saving the former champions, the governing body heralded a new dawn of collaboration with A-League clubs. Finally, some good news from the previously beleaguered league. With a collective sigh of [...]
FFA needs to ask for an advance
by philipcoates - May 2nd 2012 @ 2:03am
We all recognize that the A-League has a cash crisis. The ten clubs collectively lost $25 million last year, with some clubs obviously losing more than others. Whatever the individual club losses, the most common request from all clubs to relieve their financial burden is for the FFA coffers to fund the entire salary cap [...]
HMAS A-League and Captain Buckley sail on
by ItsCalledFootball - April 26th 2012 @ 1:07am
It’s the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the ship that could never be sunk. HMS Titanic was submerged by an iceberg in the icy waters of the North Atlantic, and hundreds lost their lives. The showpiece of modern 20th century naval architecture lies rusting and rotting on the bottom of the ocean, and like [...]
FFA must not be bold for boldness’ sake
by Baldrick44 - April 26th 2012 @ 1:01am
Frank Lowy is a clever man under pressure. He and FFA CEO Ben Buckley have attempted to advocate a league that has difficulty communicating its message to club owners who are becoming rapidly disillusioned with the governing body’s aloofness. Furthermore, the fan-base of football in Australia is becoming rapidly bemused by a body that continues [...]
FFA just can’t get an even break
by Millsy29 - April 13th 2012 @ 3:00pm
One week ago, the Federal Government announced an $8 million funding package for the development of football in Western Sydney. This included the announcement of a new A-League side for the area, which ended the speculation of whether Gold Coast United would be in the league next season. Basketball Australia boss and former New South [...]
A-League finals lost in off-field soap opera
by apaway - April 13th 2012 @ 10:01am
It seems the A-League keeps getting its on-season and off-season confused. A-League fans waited impatiently for the start of season seven, with one of the best off-season buildups ever over the signings of Harry Kewell and Brett Emerton. The saga of whether Kewell would or wouldn’t sign kept fans and media waiting for more, and [...]

Fans want a club, not a name, that fills them with Pride
by Tony Tannous - May 16th 2012 @ 3:30am
While the word “pride” featured prominently in the discourse about the desired culture of the new Western Sydney franchise, for a while yesterday it seemed the FFA had the word “culture” confused with the word “name”. That was the only conclusion to draw after The World Game yesterday reported that Pride was among the FFA’s [...]

For Holger Osieck, the pool of players Australian football has for him contains few surprises these days. Well into his second year as coach of the Socceroos, the German tactician has taken a close look many times over at the full spectrum of players at his disposal and has now settled on a core group.
